"I will show you what he is like who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them." --Luke 6:48
This boulder is in our woods behind our house. One does not have to dig very far before you find a shelf of rock up here on our 1,000-foot mountain.
In the Luke passage, Jesus goes on to explain what He means:
"He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built."
This is imagery you can easily relate to if you've seen the photos of the recent floods in Kentucky. Many were caught unaware of the raging waters or did not heed the signs of impending danger.
While flooding isn't something we have to be concerned about up on our mountain we do need to be aware of lightning strikes. We have lost a couple trees in our woods to lightning. Because of all the thunderstorms we've been experiencing lately I reread NOAA's myths and facts article. We are well protected in our house because we have lightning rods on the roof and a whole-house surge protector for our electrical equipment. But outside is another matter. The article points out "When thunder roars go indoors." That's because you could be struck by lightning that sounds miles away even before the rains come. In fact, it says you should wait to go outside 30 minutes after you no longer hear thunder.
If you are a prudent person, you will heed warnings authorities make available to us. The Bible is our spiritual authority for warning us of the impending danger of not believing in Jesus. Jesus came to rescue us from the consequences of our rebellion against God. But we must HEAR what He has to say and then ACT upon His words:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Jesus doesn't want us to be caught unaware of the impending disaster that awaits all who don't believe in Him. He wants us to build our life on Him so that we not only live forever but while still here on earth we will be supplied with all that we need to endure hardships and calamities in this fallen world.
Father, I am grateful that I can trust You to watch over me and see me safely to my heavenly home.
