Are You Ready?

"Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel."  Amos 4:12b

Many years ago my grandparents had a sign like this nailed to the old oak tree that stood behind their mailbox along a dusty gravel road.  We were sitting on her front porch, set back a ways from the road, when we heard a car coming up the road.  You could always hear the cars before they came round the bend because of the gravel.  This one stopped in the driveway.  The fellow strode up to the porch and said, "Do you mean right now?"  None of us knew what he meant so he had to explain.  He'd seen the sign and wanted to know if God was about to return right now!  Move ahead 40 some years to the surprise my husband gave me a few years ago--he'd found such a sign for us!  It took me a while to decide where to put it.  Down by the street in our suburban neighborhood might not be ingratiating to our neighbors.  As it is, we're somewhat reclusive because our house is set back up a steep driveway 380 feet from the street.  I didn't want to be branded a reclusive fanatic!  So instead it has found its year-round home in our manger in the woods next to our house.  It can be seen clearly at the top of our driveway.  I hope it causes visitors and delivery people to pause for a moment and assess their relationship with God.  Are they ready to accept His gift of salvation given through the babe whose birth we will celebrate tomorrow?

Are you ready?

Father, having a right relationship with You will make me ready when my time comes to leave this place.  Thank you for providing the Way.
