Holy Spirit Fire

John answered them all, "I baptize you with water.  But one who is more powerful than I will come....He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."  --Luke 3:16

Emmet Fox writes concerning the relationship between God and man:

"One  of the best known and most helpful [similes] is to think of man as a spark from a great fire, which is God.  The spark is not the whole of the fire but it is part of it, and therefore of the same nature, and possesses, potentially, all the characteristics of the parent fire.  It can ignite many things upon which is falls, thus producing another fire essentially of the same nature of the original fire."

On the 50th day (Pentecost) after Jesus' resurrection the assembled crowd saw flames of fire rest upon the disciples' heads as they were being filled with the Holy Spirit, enabling them to speak in the language of those present so that they could hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and be saved.  Three thousand that day believed!

The Holy Spirit in us begins as a spark that ignites the nature God placed in us when He created us in His image.  He then burns away the dross of our old life, igniting the burning desire to please God by desiring His will be done in our lives.  He has given us everything me need to do this....even the desire....when we place our trust in Him instead of the things of the world.

Fire warms, illuminates, makes food taste better!  We use it to make and run things we use every day.  In nature it clears areas of debris allowing new growth.  But God's kind of fire goes beyond all that.  His fire gives us life, not only here but eternally with Him.

The Holy Spirit has many roles in our lives.  If you want to know more about the "fruit" of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) a good place to start is HERE.

Father, I lift You up.  I sing praises to Thy Name.  Glory to be to God, my Father, my Strength and my Shield.  Amen
