Labor Day Thoughts

"....Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
-1 Corinthians 10:31

In honor of Labor Day today I wanted to talk about work.  Lilias Trotter was a missionary in the late 1800s, early 1900s.  She could have become England's greatest living artist, according to John Ruskin, but instead she obeyed the call of her Lord and Savior to minister to women in all walks of life, first in England, then in Algeria.  As I was reading Miriam Rockness's post, The Glory of Work, (←click there to read before preceding please) I came to the following realization.....

The only reason we know about Lilias Trotter today is because people like Miriam Rockness have brought her to our attention. (Read about how that came about HERE.) There are no monuments to Lilias, her books were out-of-print, no people still living to personally attest to all of Lilias's good works.  The missionary organization she founded in Algeria has merged into another organization.  One could be led to ask the question, "What difference did her life make in the scheme of things?"

A GREAT DEAL!  Even if Lilias's remembrance had not been resurrected, the value of her work was found in each moment she gave up her life for the life of Christ in her.  All her work was done for the glory of God.

In the scheme of things the only thing that matters is NOW.  That is because now is all we have and it is all that matters to God--whether we waste it or spend it according to His will.  It's in the now--the present moment--that we live and breathe and carry out the calling He has for us when we become one of his children.  What you and I do for the glory of God may be forgotten by others after we are gone, but it will never be forgotten in the Kingdom of God.

Father,  I've heard it said that Your gift to us is life.  What we do with it is our gift to You.  Thank you for giving me life.  May what I do with it be pleasing to You.
